Participarea românilor din comitatul Timiș la alegerile parlamentare din anul 1881

Abstract: In 1881, the Romanians in the Timiș “comitat” participated in the parliamentary elections of Hungary on behalf of the Romanian National Party, having national candidates. During the elections, the teachers and the priests of the villages in Timiș, leaders of the Romanian communities of voters, stood out as supporters of these candidates and the programme adopted in Sibiu. The obstructive actions of the Hungarian government circles and the lack of political experience led to the failure of the Romanians’ national candidates. The only winning Romanian candidate was General Traian Doda from the “Caraș” comitat.

Condiţia materială a învăţătorilor din comitatul Timiș, în secolul al XIX-lea

Abstract: The financial situation of teachers was an important element that linked the Romanian School with the society, as teachers were paid from the contribution of the local community. In general, teachers’ salaries in Timiș were modest in the 19th century. They varied from one locality to another, depending on the economic potential, but increased relatively towards the end of the same century, thanks to the efforts that the Romanian community made to comply with the salary-related provisions of the school legislation. As representatives of such a caring and noble profession, the Romanian teachers in the Timiș “comitat” served the national language and culture without asking to be paid according to the sacrifices they made.

Evoluția manualelor din școlile românești bănățene, în a doua jumătate a secolului al XIX-lea

Abstract: In the 19th century, the Romanian schools in Banat used valuable handbooks that contributed to the national education of the students. Given the increasingly intense magyarisation policy in schools, in the second half of the 19th century the Budapest Ministry of Education initiated a campaign that banned Romanian handbooks and replaced them with translations of Hungarian ones. Nevertheless, the teachers were able to preserve the national function of the school, teaching the students the Romanian cultural values.

Evoluții specifice ale comunei Variaș, de la începutul veacului al XVIII-lea până la mijlocul veacului al XIX-lea

Abstract: From the beginning of the Modern period and up to middle of the 19th century, Variaș was inhabited continuously and went under economic and social transformations. The Ottoman rule was replaced with the Austrian domination that allowed Serbian and German colonists to settle in the village, which was moved to the area it occupies today. In 1792, the Court of Vienna sold the village to the bishop of Zagreb. The 1848-1849 Revolution also took its toll on the village.

Tragicele evenimente desfășurate în vestul județului Timiș-Torontal, în toamna anului 1944

Abstract: On 23 August 1944, after the official announcement about Romania’s change in politics towards the alliance with the United Nations, the western part of Banat was confronted with war. In the second half of September 1944, fierce battles were fought between the Soviet forces quartered in Variaș and the German troops that put up a strong resistance in Periam. By 7 October, Periam was already occupied by the Red Army and by 9 October, the German troops were forced to withdraw beyond the Romanian border. Monuments were raised to the memory of the war heroes in several localities in Banat. Bringing these events back into the collective memory contributes to the pacifying education of the present generations.

Comuna Variaș în anii statornicirii regimului comunist în România

Abstract: The establishment of the communist regime was a tragedy for many families living in Variaș Village. The deportations to USSR and the Bărăganului Plain and the expropriations of the land changed their fate. Nevertheless, for the poor population and the war refugees, the new political system and its ideology imbued with egalitarianism and social justice meant the hope for a better life. During the communist regime, the village was electrified; new jobs were given to its inhabitants, the population was taught to read and write and was involved in cultural and sport activities. On the other hand, as time has demonstrated, humanism without freedom of speech is an artificial and nonviable construct.
